Now we have the Word falling onto stony ground. Verses 16-17 go on to tell us these people received the Word with gladness immediately after hearing it, but it has no root in themselves. Therefore it endures for a time, but when affliction or persecution arises for the Word’s sake they are offended. That Word never took root in their heart where it could grow and blossom.
